  18. <p>     Premature babies are often plagued with health problems, so
  19. women who start labor too early frequently take a drug called
  20. ritodrine to stop their contractions. But a study in the New
  21. England Journal of Medicine has found that though ritodrine is
  22. the only drug approved for that purpose by the Food and Drug
  23. Administration, it is actually close to useless--while its
  24. side effects, including fluid in the lungs, can in rare cases
  25. lead to death. The FDA is pondering its next move.

  27. <p>BIG-MONEY SAVE
  28. </p>
  29. <p>     Scientists hate NASA's proposed space station because it is
  30. almost useless for science. Some legislators hate it because it
  31. will cost $30 billion at a minimum. But other legislators, and
  32. aerospace contractors, love it because it means jobs, hefty
  33. profits and continuing American technological pre-eminence. Last
  34. week the lovers triumphed as the House approved $1.73 billion to
  35. keep the proj ect alive for another year, defeating an
  36. amendment that would have shut down the undertaking.

  38. <p>CANCER VACCINE
  39. </p>
  40. <p>     If caught early, the skin cancer called malignant melanoma is
  41. curable. If not, it's almost always fatal. But a new treatment
  42. under study at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica,
  43. Calif., appears at least to prolong lives. Researchers injected
  44. patients with a tuberculosis vaccine mixed with melanoma cells.
  45. Result: average survival went from seven to 23 months, with some
  46. staying cancer free for eight years. The doctors warn that an
  47. approved vaccine could take a decade.
